The
monstrous Beverly and her put-upon husband Laurence host
a sophisticated soiree for their neighbours, complete
with cheesy pineapples, Donna Summer and Demis Roussos.
As the evening wears on and everyone’s glasses are
constantly refilled, tensions amongst the adults reach
boiling point while Abigail and her friends run riot next
door.

The pretensions of lower-middle-class suburbia are exposed
in this wickedly sharp, largely improvised satire, which
achieved cult status as a BBC2 Play for Today in 1977,
and featured an iconic performance by Alison Steadman
as the gin-guzzling hostess from hell.
